Remember when you struggled to land a knee properly or nail that combination of punches? You’ve probably already forgotten those early challenges and accomplishments because you’re now trying to master a new technique like a jumping knee or a spinning kick.

It’s important, however, to take the time to appreciate how far you’ve come and understand where you’re at, otherwise you can feel like you’re not getting anywhere. This is where gradings can prove so valuable.

Students often mistakenly view gradings as exams intended as a means for instructors to judge them. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Gradings are there so you can see just how far you have come and to highlight areas which could benefit from extra practice. This will help to focus your training so you get the most out of the time you commit to Muay Thai.

As instructors, we see your improvement week in and week out but the gradings give you a chance to see it yourself. On days when you feel frustrated it can be useful to look back at your certificates and kruang ruang (armbands), whether they’re framed on a wall or pushed in a drawer, to remind yourself that there were other times you got frustrated… but then you cracked it.

If you would like to grade, the next opportunity is Friday, July 17 at 7.45pm for adults and Saturday, July 18 a 9.30am for juniors.
